History
Taylors was home to a resort from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. Activity centered on Chick Springs, a mineral spring thought to have healing powers. Settlers were drawn to the springs, so Dr. Burwell Chick, a resident of Charleston, purchased the land surrounding the spring and built a resort community.
The Southern Railway arrived in the area during the 1870s, which shifted the focus of Taylors from the springs to the property of a man named Alfred Taylor. A railroad depot was built on his land, which eventually became known as Taylor’s Station, inspiring the present-day name of Taylors. Beginning in the early 1900s, the heart of town was near the intersection of Taylors Road and Main Street.
Taylors was never incorporated as a city, although area residents have expressed concern about the tax base, and have therefore pushed for the creation of a municipal government.
